Roots

...OF THE MIND

This long weekend I have been away  on the borders of France & Northern Spain in the High Pyrénées. Sometimes a change is certainly better than a rest but better than that I did get both. I know those that know me will say 'What Suzanne having a rest!' but the word rest can mean many different things for many people.
For me it's been a break from the normal routine of teaching classes at set times & the school run therefore allowing me to have more of a choice of how to spend my time.
I spend time in the trees, drawing & painting,.walking, cycling & on my SUP. Whilst we as humans thrive on routines sometimes those routines become habits automatic habits rather than rituals where we have set aside a sacred time to ourselves. A hugely important aspect for our mental health.

It was Mental Health Awareness Week also this week which got me thinking about choices & what leads us to make the choices we do when presented with various options.
An interesting read if you choose to!

The psychology of choosing goes into the exploration of why we subconsciously make our decisions, how & what motivates us to do so, aswell as the needs our decisions we make are meant to satisfy.

If we make these needs high on our priority lists the decisions are easier to make. If we don't we will come up with a million excuses not to do something. Understanding & accepting these needs as what makes you, you is a part of the learning.

The author William Glasser states that all choices are made to satisfy five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun. There is also 'Rational Choice'  this is a theory framework which is used to model social and economic behaviour helping algorithms to suss out who we are & predict our choices & even influence them. The framework shows that we tend to choose which ever option will maximize our interests and provide us with the greatest utility, or benefit.

One interesting scientific statistic is that people who are curious live 30% longer than those that aren't. So whilst it might of killed the cat it will lead humans to try, discover & learn. Making many different decisions & choices.
