Smell

 ...aromatherapy.

FOOD & SMELLS FOR THOUGHT

For a long while now I have been s studying the effects of aromatherapy on the mind as part of some C.B.T research. We have tried Lemon Basil Oil in the sauna bucket...the vapours of these oils help to stimulate the emotional & spiritual side of your brain and aid with feelings of anxiety, nervousness through stimulating more calming feelings to the heart & the mind. It is perfect for  relieving stress, fatigue & muscle soreness! The basil oil is also good for respiration problems...I am testing it with my son Jack who has asthma which gets worse at this time of the year with the harvesting. For more info on oils see here.

From Hazel catkins to Almond blossom.  The beautiful blossom you see & smell on wayside trees before the leaves in February & March is bound to be Almond blossom. Originating in the Middle East they have Naturalised in southern Europe with wild Almonds found in Archaeological sites as far back as 8000BC. Especially around Greece. Those of you who have joined in on our Greek Retreats may have heard this story very sad story in Greek Mythology also connects the Almond tree with February. A Thracian Princess called Phyllis after thinking her husband to be (Demophan) had deserted her killed herself. The Gods then transformed her into an Almond tree. Demophan eventually returning was said to have embraced the Tree causing it to blossom.  Almond Trees symbolise Constancy in love & eternal hope.

The Ancient Greeks had six different kinds of love:

Eros—Sexual love
Philia—Deep friendship
Ludus—Playful love
Agape—Love for everyone (selfless love)
Pragma—Longstanding love
Philautia—Love of self

Did you know that an Almond Nut is not a Nut but a Drupe. More Nuts that are not n nuts are brazil, cashew & peanut, but hazel are nuts as are walnuts, pecans & acorns.  It’s all very confusing!
